Ryan Louis Nobu Belcher, Hawai‘i Representative

Ryan was born in Hilo, Hawai‘i providing him the opportunity to hike in the native forest of Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa, to surf and dive the Hāmākua coast, and to camp at many remote locations. Learning from his kūpuna and parents about Hawai‘i he developed a deep connection to the island that he calls home and the kuleana to take care of it. Ryan graduated from St. Joseph High School in 2003 and obtained a degree in Biology with an emphasis ecology, conservation, and evolution from University of Hawai‘i at Hilo in 2009.

In 2011, Ryan and his fianceé moved to O‘ahu, so that he could take a position with Hi‘ipaka LLC Waimea Valley. Ryan helps to manage 1,800 acres of conservation land, including 150 acres of botanical gardens and a sacred site to Hawaiian culture. At Waimea Valley Ryan gets to practice ahupua‘a land management working on a mauka restoration sites. Also he leads an estuary restoration project, which includes endangered native wetland birds. In the future, Ryan hopes to continue to bridge the gap between science and culture, continue to make lasting positive impact on Hawai‘i, and teach his young daughter to be a steward of the land.
