In 2003, Conservation Council for Hawai'i renamed its newsletter (previously the Hawai'i Conserver) to celebrate the Kölea, or Pacific Golden-Plover).

Kölea fly non-stop to Hawai'i from Arctic nesting grounds each fall. They feed on insects and other foods, and fatten up for return flights in May. Kölea are one of the most frequently seen native birds in Hawai'i, preferring lawns, fields, and other grassy areas in urban and natural settings. They faithfully return to the same habitat year after year.
